Base for double bass and bassoon was written for Joe Qiu and James Oesi, and premiered by them in Utrecht in April 2019, followed a few days later by a performance at Iklectik in London as part of the 840 concert series (see video below). Joe and James have also played the piece in Paris in July 2019.
The piece is constructed from simple counting processes which work in parallel to create a more complex structure. The intension is to foreground the rich sound of the instruments themselves, alone and in combination with each other.
