SADcloud light installation

In a slight change of focus, I’ve recently been involved in a light installation project which uses maxMSP to control lights via a dmx protocol interface.

The premise of the installation was to recreate the experience of an English summer day in a gallery in February to combat the effects of Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). The day was compressed into a three hour period. The brightness and colour spectrum of the light was controlled by maxMSP, using real-life data as a starting point. A ‘cloud synth’ was developed, to simulate the effect of passing clouds. The light is shone upwards onto a suspended iridescent cloud sculpture which reflects the light back down and around the gallery.

Working with Hareth Pochee, John Gunstone, Bertie Pleass and Glyn Hanmer, I helped to write the max patch which control the lights. Some images below. The installation is on at the Protein Gallery in Shoreditch (27 – 31 New Inn Yard, London EC2A 3EY) Feb 20th-22nd (today, tomorrow and sunday).

The installation is part of the Studio Calm and Collected SAD rescue pack.

Thanks also to Max Fordham LLP for their support in creating the installation.
